STOP racism and discrimination
10 Things I Can Do Every Day To Stop Discrimination I Can:
1. Say something. Reject bigotry in all its disguises. Do not let racist, sexist, ageist, homophobic and other stereotypical comments continue in conversation without saying how you feel. No speaking out against discrimination is contributing to the problem, and makes you feel bad.
2. Learn about other people and their culture. By learning about other people, your life will be greatly enriched, and your appreciation for your own culture will be deepened.
3. Treat other people as individuals. Do not make assumptions about them based on their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, economic status, disability, religion, etc.
4. Look for things in common with other people, and celebrate the differences. We can learn something from and appreciate something about everyone.
5. Be informed about the issues. Information will reinforce your beliefs, and allow you to inform others.
6. Declare my area and group part of a "Discrimination Free Zone". This will "set the rules" for people interacting with you.
7. Hold my public officials accountable. They are your representatives. Do they speak out in defense of civil rights? Do they include minority communities in planning and doing?
8. Respect myself. You forebears had traditions and successes that contributed to the greatness of our country.
9. Network with other groups working toward the same goals. You’ll meet great people and find real support for your efforts.
10. Get involved in my community. What is happening in your schools? What are your community groups and religious organizations doing to support efforts against discrimination? Your voice can make a big difference at the local level.
